Scar

Protectionism and isolationism. Humans are extremely cruel and self-centred; we all have a tendency to ignore the relationships between the landscape in order to build colonies and walls throughout the natural environment, isolating, defending, and cutting off relationships of our territories from the outside world. Because everyone has their own social structure, it weakens the ties that bind humans to nature, diminishes diversity and knowledge, and tends to cause more issues with each other.Infrastructure that cuts across a landscape is a barrier to both mankind and the natural world. It prohibits nature and civilisation from expanding their territories over the scars caused by human infrastructure. In order to repair the damage, infrastructure that bypasses the barrier created by civilisation needed to be put into place. My project is to stitch the wounds of the Royal Military Canal from Hythe to Rye. The canal was built between 1804 and 1809. It was used as a prevention of the Napoleon invasion but ended up not being used as it never happened, and the canal is left on site. It created a strong barrier to towns and nature growing over each other.
